Established in 1933 by Willy Hallheimer and Werner Baer in Zurich, Halba is one of Switzerland's leading producer of fine chocolate and at the very forefront of sustainability and fair practices: https://www.halba.ch/en.html
Halba has received the Swiss Ethics Award for the "Sustainable Chocolate from Ecuador" project which pursues economic, ecological and social goals, specifically the increase in living standards, biodiversity and the integration and promotion of young farmers. Together with Coop and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ, German Corporation for International Cooperation GmbH), Halba educates local cacao producers in Ecuador as agroforestry coaches. They, in turn, pass on their knowledge to other cacao farmers. Together with Fairtrade Africa, Halba supports a project against the deforestation of the forests of West Africa. The project supports 2,500 farmers in converting their cocoa monocultures into mixed crops. Since 2011, Halba has already planted 457,049 trees. In collaboration with the children and youth initiative Plant-for-the-Planet, Halba produces “good chocolate”. Halba forgoes any profit and all money generated is instead used for reforestation projects in Mexico.
