The title is a play on a lyric from the Barbie Girl song.
Meshtastic (and other related projects such as MeshCore and Reticulum RNodes) are based on the LoRa (Long Range) chirp spread spectrum radio protocol. LoRa is fairly low link throughput but can be heard at up to 20db below the noise floor. It is normally used at extremely low power less than or equal to1 watt. This means it is easy to run infrastructure nodes on a small solar panel and battery.
Meshtastic is an off-grid messenger built on top of LoRa that uses managed flood routing and hop counts to create a text-only communications network with commodity hardware. It can be used to monitor sensors such as soil moisture, light levels and much more. The main use case though for a lot of people is for text messaging and sharing GPS location or waypoints on a map.

I like meshtastic, I have a node where I live and the network is surprisingly popular. Reticulum is definitely the cooler version better than meshtastic. A network of networks as their tag line goes. Still figuring it out!

I received my heltec v3 / meshnology device today. I was just texting into the void, i dont think i have anyone around as the messages failed. At one point i did see 2 nodes or something on my device status screen. Lots of reading up to do. Will have to get a hat for my pi!
ill have to take this around with me everywhere from now on.
Reticulum looks rather interesting!

Meshtastic is certainly interesting, I've tried reticulum on close range with high settings too and it was enough to serve some basic web pages. But I think it's only practical as a short messaging service. You can also run bots on meshtastic, like TC2-BBS (look it up)

Havnt spent enough time checking out meshatic to be honest. Think im gonna get a new antenna to improve my range. Yes, TC2-BBS looks cool, keen to check it out. Reticulum i thought is more general and can do higher bandwidth its not just lora like meshtastic.
We should have a known private channel on meshtastic so that local meshes can chat monero off-grid ;)
