First edition. 311, [1], 6pp. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with elaborate blindtsamped front and back, gilt-stamped spine, brown coated endpapers. Housed in folding cloth chemise and morocco-backed slipcase.
Very Good with sunning and small nick to spine, tips worn, boards a little bowed, former owner's name written on title page, front hinge a little free, contents bright and clean. Small tear to p. 65. A little fraying to rear cloth of slipcase. Laid in postcard depicting "The Great Fire at Dr. Tibbles VI-Coca Factory, Feb. 7 1903."
The first edition of the first full-length book on cocaine in English, describing the beneficial powers of coca leaves. The author used coca leaves for years and claims thousands of cures of various ailments.
He produced and sold a "Compound Essence of Cocaine," advertised among the ads at the back of the book. An incredible rarity, unknown to Mariani and Mortimer, with only two in North American holdings, three in the UK. Phantastica 262 (this copy). A Horowitz high spot.
